Lacrosse PEI recognizes the importance of the Lacrosse and its origins in North American Indigenous communities. Over the years we have celebrated the game on many occassions but one event that was very profound was the "Honour Our Game" Lacrosse Day in Morell, PE on Saturday, June 8, 2019. LPEI was honoured to welcome performances by the Mi'kmaq Heritage Actors, a Try Lacrosse session with Jesse and Cruzer Meuse from Bear River First Nation in NS, a Try Women's Lacrosse session, and games for our registered players.

"For many Indigenous nations across North America, lacrosse is a sacred game. Historian Allan Downey has studied the sport as a scholar and as a player. He spent ten years writing a book called The Creator’s Game: Lacrosse, Identity, and Indigenous Nationhood. Downey says lacrosse provides a lens through which you can see hundreds of years of history and that the game plays a part in everything from residential schools to reclaiming identities in Indigenous cultures".
String King's donation supports lacrosse growth in Indigenous communities

In November 2017 we visited with some of the youth from Abegweit First Nation at Mount Stewart Consolidated (K-8) and also to the youth on Lennox Island at the John J. Sark Memorial Elementary (K-6) to deliver the lacrosse sticks that were graciously donated by String King (U.S.A)

We led some basic instruction and some games for the kids to get a chance to participate in the sport, be active and have fun! We are pleased to be able to leave the equipment with the schools for their use and Lacrosse PEI plans to return every few months to support the students development.

Lacrosse PEI is very excited to announce a special event Saturday, May 27th, 2017!
As many of you may know, lacrosse has a rich cultural history that originated within North American indigenous communities. It was known by different names in the beginning, but was widely regarded as "The Creator's Game" and considered a gift from the Creator.
The game, steeped in tradition and respect, was played for a variety of reasons, including for healing, to settle disputes, for recreational as well as religious purposes. Within some indigenous communities, the handmade wooden "crosse" or stick (as it is now known) has been given to a child at birth and buried with him at the end of his life. The wooden stick, and the game itself, has been regarded as sacred
Lacrosse PEI has partnered with Mi'kmaq Confederacy and Aboriginal Sport Circle to provide this opportunity for our players, parents and volunteers to join us in 'Honouring the Game'. We hope you will join us for this special event!

Indigenous Development Committee Nomination
In late 2016, Lacrosse PEI nominated a representative to join the Canadian Lacrosse Association's (CLA) Indigenous Development Committee (IDC).
The IDC's mission is to lead in the education of the Indigenous roots of Lacrosse and support the growth and development of the Creator's game. It's vision is to increase Indigenous participation by delivering the spirit of the Creator's game to every community.
Lacrosse PEI has partnered the Aboriginal Sports Circle, the Mi'kmaq
Confederacy of PEI and it's members to educate the current participants of field lacrosse of the origins of the game and to promote the participation at a grass roots level within the Indigenous Communities on PEI.
We are looking forward to put our action plan in place this spring and to continue to promote the message of "Honour Our Game".
